my how i've dabbled

Other than my tired brain, and the ghost in the machine that is the antique board at UMFM, an interesting show this week. A wide range at least, and a little closer to the future aesthetic I was hoping for.

Next week is not to be missed, my brother from another Sipreano will be passing through Winnipeg on his way back to Vancouver. Good move. Anyways, you may know him from his work on reissues with Light In The Attic (Jamaica To Toronto, Songs For The New Industrial State, The Summer Records Anthology and many more). I know him from many a long stretch of highway in pursuit of undocumented Canadiana. Tune in, it'll be well worth it.

Anyhow, here's the tracklisting for the last installment. DL the show in the comments section.

Better late...

On what seemed like the first nice day of the year, The CIFP got off to a late start. The homie St. Louis was high off his recent win as National PR student of the year or something, and dragged his heels all the way up to the station (as this photo set can attest to). I ain't mad though, it was hella amusing. And I am definitely not indentured to that quick moving second hand. Not by any stretch. We did manage to hit about half of the local locations of a particular coffee peddler, and exchange pounds with a number of notable Winnipeggers (Mr Haynes, I see you). We also met a man who's secret to longevity was marshmallows, and knew where all the old theatres on Portage used to be.

A quick trip to Music Trader on Osborne helped fill a few missing pieces into the playlist, these Madlib/Dilla tribute records are starting to take up their own crate. That Animal Collective joint has been burning a hole in my head for a good six months, so I had to do something about it. Won't be the last sharp left the show takes. Ghanaian Highlife to Pinoy Disco to Canadian Bar Rock. Anyways, the night capped off with a damn near perfect sunset and more than a fair share of alcoholic vibes. I'm definitely shaking the rust off, and getting used to the quirks of the station (m*th*rf**k*ng channel 2 audition button!!!!), but something is coming together. Here's the breakdown, and there's a download link in the comment section (Oh, and photos again c/o Steve St. Louis)...

In Good Company

The pre show kickoff for The Cast Iron Frying Pan went down this past Saturday on UMFM's Winnipeg Natural Funk Company. Between 4-6 PM every Saturday, Host/DJ Chris Mulligan holds it down for a loyal and discerning listenership. With a carefully chosen mix of styles (I'm especially impressed by his Jazz Funk selections), Chris deserves daps for bringing his own dimension to this thing of ours.

Charlie Hustle and I were a little late to the party, but we tuned in for the drive up Pembina Highway to the U of M. This all vinyl funk excursion was timely, as Mr. Hustle deaded his show recently (Keep Rising with David Haynes), and I was about to embark on my own journey. Pretty sure it's just a hiatus for Charles, as he mentions during the broadcast. For this one I bumped the CanCon up in my usual record setting fashion (Wayne St John, Billy Robinson, Shawnigan Lake Jazz Band), but was blindsided by Charlie Hustle's surprise inclusion of Norris Vines & The Lovelines "Give In" on the Smile label. A far better tune than I remembered.

In my opinion, the triumvirate was a success. I look forward to the next one. Mulligan is doing a Disco show on May 30th (with guest DJ Brent Phillips), so be sure to tune into that too. Check the comments for a link to the program, in two parts...
